︎JULY 6 - JULY 10, 2022︎
How does design of the built environment–interior and exterior–define the way we experience the world? How can Black and Brown queer creators construct spaces and the objects that fill it to activate our aesthetics?
This 4-day workshop exposes participants to the ways their aesthetic interests—from architecture to interior design, art to floral and furniture design—function in professional and business contexts and helps them understand the different roles available to them in a variety of creative industries. Recognizing that many LGBTQIA2S+ youths are attracted to career paths that are guided by aesthetic principles, we also deconstruct the innate power Black and Brown queer creators/ makers posses in the categories of design, cultural production and taste, and how we might better draw a line around in it in order to protect it from exploitation.
In partnership with entities from nationally- recognized design brands to Black and Brown architects, artists and entrepreneurs running their own businesses, participants will have the rare opportunity to engage and learn through hands-on workshops, informative talks from working designers, and behind-the-scenes tours of studios, workshops and galleries.
We also partner with non-profit organizations, allowing students to experience what design for social good can look like.
In This Course We Will:
︎Learn to see space and human-made objects through the lens of design and understand our sensory experience of a built environment, how it makes us feel, and what design elements accomplish those intentions
︎Engage in hands-on workshops and activities that offer a primer on the technical aspects of a diversity of design industry fields from architecture to floral design
︎Make connections with Black and Brown queer practitioners and visionaries, gleaning professional exposure and insight, and hearing their personal stories of coming up as a person of color in their fields of expertise
